Ferruginous Duck - Aythya nyroca

Pictures - John Foss

This diving duck feeds on aquatic plants, insects and even small fish, but it will also feed by dabbling. The Ferruginous Duck is identified by the narrow black band around its neck, but they are also quite recognisable in flight as they flash bright white wing bars. The specimens on this page were photographed at Vilamoura reed beds where they outnumbered the Pochards.
