Great Cormorant - Phalacrocorax carbo

Pictures - John Foss

The only breeding population of Great Cormorants in Portugal is on an inland lake. In Portugal, these large, essentially black birds have a white cheek, rear head and thigh patch in breeding plumage. They live exclusively on fish.

The specimens on this page were photographed drying their wings at Ribeira do Almagem at Cabanas De Tavira (bottom) at low tide, and at Vilamoura Marina Portugal.
